This is a general introductory for the Indian Motorcycle Company.

Indian is a brand of motorcycles that was created in the United States and was directly competitive with Harley Davidson in its beginning years. The motorcycle was originally created between the years of 1901 to 1953, the name was originally the Indian Motorcycle company, as it was renamed in the year 1928 to Indian. The company was found in Springfield Massachusetts by two men named George Hendee and Carl Hedstrom. At one time Indian was the largest manufacturers of motorcycles in the entire world. Unfortunately for them, this was at a time when there wasn’t much competition as this was in the really early 1900s. Soon after more competition would come around and eventually snuff the company out in the year 1953. The most popular models in that time were the Scout and Chief motorcycles. World War Two came around in the early part of the 1940s and Indian saw their biggest competitor take the contracts for that war, which was Harley Davidson. Because of this, Harley grew in popularity because of their war efforts and Indian soon went bankrupt and out of business. Later on Polaris would pick up the company and attempt to bring it back to its former glory. This came with mediocre success. To this day, Polaris has relocated the company to North Carolina, by merging it with other branches of Polaris Inc. The brand has saw limited success with three of its major models all built under the name of Indian. Indian may not last, but will always be a classic.
